A re-elected Andrews Labor Government will deliver a $1.79 million major upgrade of the Alexandra Showgrounds and Recreation Reserve.
Labor candidate for Eildon, Sally Brennan, and Labor Upper House Member for Northern Victoria, Jaclyn Symes made the commitment today at the Alexandra Showgrounds and Recreation Reserve.
Last year, locals raised nearly $250,000 through the running of the canteen and their afternoon teas to build female friendly facilities at the reserve’s netball club, which was backed with $95,000 from the Andrews Labor Government.
Despite this amazing effort, other parts of the reserve’s facilities are failing to meet the sporting and community needs of the precinct.
Under a re-elected Labor Government, funding will go towards the rebuild of the multipurpose facilities at the reserve, benefitting Alexandra Rebels Football Netball Club. The showground and recreation reserve is also used by the Alexandra Pastoral and Agricultural Association, Alexandra Cricket Club, and Alexandra Poultry Society.
The upgrades will deliver Alexandra clubs and the local community the modern sporting facilities they deserve.
“I want to congratulate Sally Brennan, our fantastic Labor candidate for Eildon, who has campaigned to secure this vital funding,” Ms Symes said.
“Community sports is about community spirit and with this investment, Labor will help make Alexandra’s sporting clubs – and the local community – stronger than ever.
“Whether it’s great schools, better roads or upgraded sporting facilities, only Labor can be trusted to deliver for Eildon families.”
Ms Brennan, has had this project firmly on her radar as a ‘must have’ for Alexandra.
“I’ve worked very hard to get this important project up, and I couldn’t be happier that the Andrews Labor Government has made this commitment,” she said.
“I’ve been involved in the football and netball league for many years and spent a lot of time at the Rebels and know firsthand that this is an exemplar club is every way, and they have done the hard work to position themselves for this well-deserved commitment.
“I’ve been involved in local footy and netball for many years, and I know how hard it is to get a project to this point, its blood, sweat and tears plus patience and determination.
“I’m just so delighted to be able to bring the news, and celebrate with the clubs and community.”
The commitment builds on the Andrews Labor Government’s investments in the tight-knit Alexandra community, including $200,000 for the Alexandra Indoor Heated Pop up Pool and $200,000 for the Scout and Community Shed as part of Pick My Project, and funding for the Continuing Education and Arts Centre of Alexandra Inc (CEACA).
While the Liberals cut funding for hospitals and schools, and closed TAFE campuses – only Labor will invest in the projects our community really needs.
The Labor Government has made the biggest investment in grassroots sporting opportunities in Victoria’s history, with $420 million dedicated to community sports.
